在中国古代，会以县镇为单位，编纂记录一个地方的历史，人物，等重大事件，还有饮食风景的记录。这些历史洪流之中的旁枝末节，在大的史书上是不得见的。但也因为他的细致入微，也是考据一个地方过去历史的重要参照。

比如近代对《西游记》作者的认定，就是胡适等人考究淮安县志而判定的。县志以明清时代留存最多，据1976年统计，我国仅现存的地方志即达8000多种，约12万卷。
